How To Photograph A House For Our Artists:

We will need both long shots and close-ups for detail.  Stand as far away from the house as possible to get as undistorted view as possible.  This will give us a better feel for the height of the roof, etc.  Ideally, we like to draw the house from about 15 degrees off center.  But to be sure we have the best angle, we request you take pictures approximately 15, 25, and 45 degrees off center in both directions.  Be sure we can see the detail on the sides of the house as well.  If you take photos from very far away, you may need to zoom in or move closer for secondary shots so we see the detail of the yard, etc.

Don’t worry about trees or bushes in the way.  Look at the house as though they aren’t there, and then take a photo from what you think is the most flattering angle of the house.  We can trim bushes and move trees and still make the house look like it really is.  If there are many trees in obstructing the view, try to get a long shot anyway to show us roof-line if possible.  When something is obstructing the view, remember to show us in another shot the detail of what was hidden.

If you are shooting up a hill at the house and the roof is barely visible, try to take a photo from some side angle to show us the pitch of the roof and from whatever angle you can show us the color of the roof.

If you are limited in space so you can’t back up to get a long shot (cliff or woods in the way), then do the best you can and pivot where you stand to shoot the entire house in as many shots as it takes.  But still move across in front of the house and repeat the process from 15, 25 and 45 degrees.  Also turn around and show what is behind you that is limiting your distance.  We may want to draw in a hint of trees or a wall for instance.

  • Remember, we draw all houses in full summer regalia unless you tell us otherwise.  It is helpful, if photos are taken in the winter, to know if there are any trees or bushes that should be colored something other than green and what kind of flowers, if any, are usually planted.

  • We automatically close windows, remove garbage cans and basketball hoops and anything else we think may distract buyers.  We usually leave in American flags, flower pots and door wreaths (with appropriate seasonal flowers drawn in).

  • After you have taken the long shots, please take relative close-ups that show just the front of the house in the picture.  Then photograph details of sidewalks, front door, garage door, etc.

  • Resolution for email photos:  Files of about 300 kb to 500 kb should be large enough for drawing. Photos for front of deluxe brochures, however, should be over 1 mb (and at least 9" wide in ruler form with correct scaling of the height to match)

  • Most houses except difficult subjects or large mansions can be photographed in about 10 shots or less.  These can be emailed to me at mary@marydstudios.com.

    • If you have many photos, call our toll free number, 877.664.2946, and we will help you upload directly to our server.

Description
1
This picture started off grainy, miscolored, and heavily over exposed in the window. We took care of it easily by merging photos and doing a simple color correction procedure and also removed extra grainyness.
2
Another similar situation with an over-exposed window image. We fixed it by merging an image with detail in the window.
3
The original images were completely unattractive until we merged the two and built our own extra scenery behind this house. Taken in two different seasons, this house came out to be much better then what we started with.
4
The original image wasn't terrible to begin with, but there were vehicles blocking the view of the garage. In the altered photo we've removed the vehicles and greened up the grass and blued up the sky a little more to liven it up.
5
The original image here was bland. Had a lack of color in the sky and the grass appeared dead and yellow with snow scattered about. We added life to it in the final resulting image. Green grass, no snow, blue sky.
